From 11 to 13 May 2026, Professor Cecilia Chan was invited by the Hong Kong Education Bureau to attend the 2026 World Digital Education Conference (WDEC 2026) in Hangzhou, together with the Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin.

Themed AI+Education: Transformation, Development, and Governance”, WDEC 2026 was organised by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province. The conference brought together national education leaders, diplomatic representatives, international organisations, university presidents, school leaders, AI experts, scholars, and industry representatives from China and abroad to explore how intelligent technologies can advance educational transformation, equity, quality, and governance.

Discussions highlighted the importance of high-quality digital education resources, AI governance, smart campuses, and practical standards for the application of AI in education. These themes closely align with Professor Chan and her team’s ongoing research on AI in education, particularly in assessment rethinking and redesign, AI literacy, teacher professional development, and the cultivation of students’ holistic competencies.

Insights gained from WDEC 2026 will continue to inform Professor Chan and her team’s work at the AI in Education Lab. The team remains committed to collaborating with schools, institutions, researchers, and industry partners to explore how education can sustain its human-centred and developmental mission amid rapid digital transformation, ensuring that technology enhances, rather than replaces, meaningful learning, teaching, and human interaction.
