On 16 September 2026, Professor Cecilia K. Y. Chan was invited by the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) to deliver a lecture as part of the “Beyond Boundaries” T&L Lecture Series.

Professor Chan’s lecture, titled “AI-giarism and Assessment in the AI Era”, focused on how generative AI is reshaping academic integrity, authorship, learning, and assessment in higher education. The session attracted a strong turnout from across the BNBU community and provided an engaging platform for exchange among faculty members and students.

During the lecture, Professor Chan discussed emerging issues such as AI guilt and AI-giarism, highlighting how the boundaries of academic misconduct are changing in the age of generative AI. She emphasised that the key question is no longer simply whether students use AI, but whether they outsource their thinking and whether meaningful learning is taking place.

Professor Chan also shared approaches for moving beyond detection and towards rethinking assessment design. The lecture introduced AI-resilient assessment strategies that value students’ judgement, creativity and responsible human-AI partnership. She also discussed how her TACO framework – Think, Ask, Check, Own – can be used to support healthy human-AI collaboration in learning.

The session featured active participation from faculty and students, who exchanged experiences and insights on AI use in teaching and learning. Professor Chan also introduced examples of assessment design support, including her SuperTA tool and a six-dimension AI literacy framework for fostering responsible AI use.

During the visit, Professor Chan also met with Professor Patrick Chau, Provost of BNBU, her long-time mentor and friend.

The lecture reflected the aim of the “Beyond Boundaries” T&L Lecture Series to encourage interdisciplinary exchange and inspire deeper thinking on teaching and learning. It also highlighted the importance of continued dialogue among educators and institutions as higher education responds to the opportunities and challenges brought by generative AI.
