Professor Cecilia Chan Receives the 10th Outstanding Achievement Award in Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education
Professor Cecilia K. Y. Chan has received the Third-Class Award in Educational Science Research at the 10th Outstanding Achievement Awards in Scientific Research in Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences), presented by the Ministry of Education of China. She is also one of five researchers in Hong Kong, China, to receive this prestigious distinction this year.
Professor Chan received this recognition for her research paper, “A comprehensive AI policy education framework for university teaching and learning,” published in the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education. (paper link: https://doi.org/10.1186/s41239-023-00408-3)
The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, drawing on perspectives from students, teachers, and university staff across different disciplines in Hong Kong. It proposes a comprehensive AI ecosystem education policy framework encompassing teaching, governance, and institutional operations, providing practical guidance for universities seeking to integrate AI responsibly and effectively.
Reflecting on the recognition, Professor Chan shared:
"I am honoured to receive this award and grateful to the Ministry of Education of China for recognising this research. At a time when AI brings both excitement and uncertainty, education must help shape its future. This research offers institutions a framework to move forward with confidence, ensuring that innovation goes hand in hand with trust, accountability and meaningful learning."
Professor Chan also expressed her sincere appreciation to her research team, colleagues, students, and collaborators for their continued support and contributions. She extended special thanks to the students, teachers, and university staff who participated in the research and shared their valuable perspectives.
The Ministry of Education’s Outstanding Achievement Awards in Scientific Research in Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences) are national awards that carry considerable prestige and influence within China’s humanities and social sciences research community. Established in 1995, the awards have consistently encouraged researchers in higher education to pursue research and innovation. This recognition highlights Professor Chan's contributions to advancing AI policy and educational innovation. Her work continues to support the development of responsible, ethical, and human-centred approaches to AI integration in higher education.
