On 26 June 2026, from 12:30 to 14:00 HKT, Professor Cecilia K. Y. Chan was invited to speak at the Main Stage session “Digital Education Development in Primary and Secondary Schools: Empowering Education through Artificial Intelligence” at Learning & Teaching Expo 2026.

Organised by Smart City Consortium, presented by Hong Kong Education City, and supported by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government, Learning & Teaching Expo 2026 is a major platform bringing together educators, school leaders, policymakers, and innovators from Hong Kong and beyond to exchange ideas on the future of education. Under this year’s theme, “Reimagining Education: Human-Centric, Future-Ready,” the Expo explored how innovative pedagogies, digital transformation, and emerging technologies can enrich teaching and learning across schools.

As part of the Expo’s Main Stage programme, the session “Digital Education Development in Primary and Secondary Schools: Empowering Education through Artificial Intelligence” focused on the evolving landscape of digital education in primary and secondary schools, with particular attention to the role of artificial intelligence in supporting school development, curriculum innovation, and future-ready learning.

The session opened with welcoming remarks by Dr Jeff Sze Chun Fai, JP, Under Secretary for Education, who also joined the Award Presentation Ceremony for the “Blueprint for Digital Education Development in Primary and Secondary Schools” Cover Design Selection. Ms Edith Tse Yuen Ching, Principal Assistant Secretary (Innovation Technology Education), presented awards for the “AI for Science Education” Teaching Plan Design Award Scheme. Dr William Lam Wai Lim, Principal Education Officer (Innovation Technology Education and Quality Assurance), then delivered a sharing session on “From Vision to Action: Co-creating a Digitalised Ecosystem for Schools,” offering an in-depth account of the background, vision, and strategic directions of the Blueprint for Digital Education Development in Primary and Secondary Schools.

Building on the discussion of the Blueprint, Professor Chan then delivered her keynote speech, “From Blueprint to Practice: Leading AI Transformation in Hong Kong Schools.” Drawing on research from the University of Hong Kong’s AI in Education Lab and her experience supporting schools across Hong Kong, she addressed four key areas: Hong Kong’s positioning in the global development of AI in education; the transition from blueprint to school-level action; two major concerns in AI education, namely students’ reduced thinking and assessment challenges; and research-based approaches to responsible and effective AI integration.

Professor Chan emphasised the importance of connecting strategic vision with practical action at different levels of the education system. She discussed the roles of students, teachers, schools, and society, and introduced a range of resources and frameworks developed through her work, including AI literacy assessments and curriculum initiatives, the TACO Framework, the AI Assessment Integration Framework, and AI-assisted teaching tools such as SuperTA and My Exam Generator E+. Together, these examples showed how AI transformation can be translated into tangible support for curriculum design, assessment innovation, and classroom practice.

The session offered valuable insights into how Hong Kong schools can navigate the next stage of AI transformation while maintaining a strong focus on educational quality, critical thinking, academic integrity, creativity, and human judgement in an AI-enabled future.
